How to Make a Living Room Table from an Old Tire

With upcycling being a fashionable trend, why not integrate an upcycled piece of furniture into your living room? Instead of purchasing a new coffee table for your living room, create something elegant and interesting using an old tire as your base.

Edit Steps

  1. Select and clean a tire. While the tire treads will have no bearing on whether the tire will make for a sturdy base, you will want to ensure that the tire is intact and has no large rips or holes.

    • Scrub well with dish soap and a scrub brush. Consider doing this outside, preferably near your garden hose.

    • Hose off soap and debris.

    • Repeat if necessary.

    • Allow time for the tire to dry completely before starting your craft.

  2. Measure and create the tabletop. Use your measuring tape to obtain the measurements of the tire opening to ascertain the plywood size. You will be cutting out a circular piece for the top.

    • Mark the measurements directly on the plywood using a pencil and then use the jig saw to cut to fit. Don’t forget to wear your safety glasses when using the jig saw.

  3. Measure and create the table bottom. Instead of designing the bottom to match the top exactly, take the measurements of the tire’s diameter and then subtract 2 inches. You will be creating a circular piece for the bottom as well.

    • Cut piece from the plywood and set aside.

  4. Secure the table legs to the bottom of the table. Using the plywood bottom, determine the spacing before you secure them in place. Position the legs in different areas of the tire bottom to see which placement has the best balance.

    • Use wood glue to secure the legs to the table bottom. Make sure wood glue has completely dried before adding screws.

    • Secure by drilling the legs to the plywood bottom and then secure them with L brackets.

  5. Attach top and bottom pieces of plywood to the tire using construction adhesive.

    • Start with the bottom piece and use an ample amount of glue for both pieces.

  6. Paint and/or stain the plywood and legs. All wood pieces should have a few coats of stain or paint. Now is a good time to get a little creative and you can apply a variety of paint and stain techniques to the wood or just add a few smooth coats of stain to create a refined look.

  7. Wrap the outside area of the tire with the rope. Apply construction adhesive to a small section of the tire and then (working quickly) wind the rope around the perimeter.

    • Wind tightly so you can no longer identify the base as being a tire.

  8. Place it on your living room and enjoy!

Edit Tips

  • Instead of using rope, consider wrapping the tire with heavy fabric instead.

How to Plan the Perfect Valentine’s Day for Your Wife

Valentine’s Day can come with a fair bit of pressure to make it as romantic and amazing as possible, but relax, it’s not too difficult to show your love and to be genuine. At the heart of the day is thinking about your wife and what she appreciates, then doing it. If you plan the day right, she will think of you glowingly for months, even years.

Edit Steps

Edit Date Help

Edit Planning the Perfect Valentine’s Day

  1. Plan at least one surprise. It’s always nice to have your expectations surpassed. This is why you must plan at least one surprise that you know she wouldn’t expect in a million thoughts. Some surprise ideas include:

    • Mail a handwritten letter and a card the day before (or in as much time ahead as needed to reach the mailbox). Postage is so romantic, simply because so few people use it to send messages now. Insert a handwritten poem as well as your dedication and letter.

    • Show up with a cup of chocolate mousse in bed as a breakfast appetizer. Beginning the day with something sweet sets the perfect tone for the rest of the day.

    • Text her a poem. A love sonnet is great, but lyrics to a love ballad from her favorite era works just as well. You can be more imaginative than just taking her out to dinner in the evening, you know you can.

    • Fruit can be a sweet gift for your beloved wife in place of the usual flowers, provided it has had some effort put into it.

    • Have a few small gifts piled up at the foot of the bed or arranged on the breakfast tray, consisting of simple joys that you know she likes. Choose things like seeds for growing flowers this coming spring, a new release from a favorite author, a watercolor paint set or vouchers for a massage at her favorite beauty parlor.

  2. Be frivolously juvenile again. Hey, you’re spending a day with a wonderful woman. It’s worth throwing some caution aside. Take her out to dessert, and if she can’t decide between two desserts, order them both. Try to win her a stuffed animal from the arcade, or buy her a bouquet of balloons big enough to lift a small child off the ground. Take her back to her childhood for a bit of fun, just so that she feels worth it.

  3. Focus on her. In the morning, have her favorite breakfast with her. In the evening, rent the chick flick she wants to see. Sit through it and act happy; your suffering will pay off in her gratitude for your fortitude! If you buy chocolates or flowers, make sure they’re her favorite; bonus points if they’re ones she rarely has because of their price and exclusivity.

    • She will adore you if you learn the proper way to put flowers in a vase. Bring home a bouquet and tell her to sit down and talk about her day while you put your new skill to work. She’ll be impressed at your handiwork and ability to listen at the same time.

  4. Think back on your memories together. What did you do when you were just starting out? If you went to Wendy’s all the time, show up at the door with two “Frosties” and the first movie you saw together.

  5. Try a big, romantic gesture. Visit somewhere out of a book or movie she likes. Take her somewhere cold where she has to wear gloves, then pull off one glove at a time and kiss every finger tip (she will melt at this gesture). Bring home so many flowers it looks like you bought out the flower stand, or pick a bouquet of wild flowers. Wash her hair for her or serenade her––it’s okay to use a stereo.

  6. Proclaim your love to the world. Or at least to a few people. Send her flowers at work so everyone can see, or stop her in the middle of the crowd and kiss her. Write your initials in sidewalk chalk. Hire a mariachi band to play outside her window or office.

  7. Tell her all day that she’s beautiful. Buy her a beautiful vintage hand-held mirror and say a woman so lovely deserves to look at herself in a mirror as delicately crafted as she is.

  8. Spend time with her. Set your alarm early and hold her close in the morning. If she has to go somewhere, walk her out to her car just to open the door. Go rollerblading together. Show up at school to pick up the kids with her. Slow dance to jazz love songs or just sing to her and dance under the stars. Do things that revive the magic in your romance.

Edit Tips

  • Get babysitting for the evening if relevant. It’s hard to feel romantic with children buzzing around.

  • If she loves roses a lot, consider giving her a pot of live roses that she can plant as spring arrives and have your love bloom again yearly.

  • If planning a vacation surprise, be sure to tee it up with her work schedule or any other responsibilities she has. It will be disappointing for both of you if she’s unable to go because of prior commitments. In some places, you might even be able to arrange time off for her direct with the boss, but that will depend on where she works and their flexibility.

Edit Warnings

  • Some women will be disappointed with staying home, others will prefer it. Make sure you know which type your wife is and plan accordingly.

Edit Things You’ll Need

  • Gifts

  • Flowers, chocolates

  • Dinner booking or ingredients

  • Favorite DVD if staying at home

How to Exercise in Your Bedroom

Exercising has many benefits, including improved cardiovascular and immune system, brain function, better and more productive sleep, not to mention a boosted mood. But excuses for not exercising often focus on lack of time or lack of funds. By exercising in the comfort of your own bedroom, you can work around both excuses. What’s more, you’ll still get in fantastic shape.

Edit Steps

Edit Part 1: Preparing the bedroom

  1. Designate a place in your room to exercise. To determine if a space is big enough, try laying down and doing ‘snow angels’. If your arms or legs don’t hit anything, you’re good to go!

  2. Purchase any exercise equipment you would like to use. While this step isn’t mandatory, different types of exercise equipment can allow you to do more types of workouts in the comfort of your own space. Some good starter items include:

    • Yoga mat

    • Stability ball

    • Small weights

    • Jump rope

    • Stretching bands.

Edit Part 2: Warming up

  1. Warm up. Even though you’re not leaving your room, it’s important to do a warm up before doing any type of exercise.

  2. Stretch. If you stretch your muscles initially, you are less likely to harm them when doing more vigorous exercise.

Edit Part 3: Finding suitable exercises for small spaces

  1. Tone your abs. Sit ups will tone your abs and help get your heart rate pumping. If you need to, try putting a heavy object on your feet to make sure your sit ups are precise.

  2. Build upper body strength. You can do this by performing push ups, planks, and lifting weights. Be careful though, that if you decide to lift weights, you don’t hurt yourself; take all appropriate precautions when handling and shifting weights.

  3. Jump rope. Jumping rope is no longer exclusive to first graders, and here is why: jump roping for ten minutes burns off as many calories as running an eight minute mile for most people.[1] If you have space in your room, go for it!

    • Check that there are no light fittings, fans, mobiles, etc. likely to get hit in the spot you’ve chosen. Also, check wall hangings, shelves, etc., anything that could be in the range of the rope’s fall.

  4. Tone your legs. Not only does running in place exercise your heart rate, it can also tone your legs if you do it often enough. Additional stretching and lunging can also do the trick.

  5. Try yoga. Yoga is a great way to wind down and refresh your mind. It’s also a good, gentle form of exercise that will keep you well toned.

Edit Tips

  • Make sure that the bedroom is tidy before exercising.

Edit Warnings

  • Over-exercising is a real danger, and it impacts more people than is often realized. If you are on the brink of collapse, stop what you are doing immediately, rest, and get plenty of water. In extreme cases over-exercising can lead to scarring of the heart and irregular pulses.
